A disposal that hums, leaks or refuses to turn on is a nuisance in a busy kitchen. Many problems can be fixed in minutes, and some call for a replacement. Switch off a disposal that leaks below the sink or pushes water into the dishwasher, then Tell the 24/7 line.
Tell the dispatcher if the disposal is leaking or just stuck.

If the disposal hums but the blades do not spin, something is stuck. Switch it off, unplug it or shut off the breaker, and use the hex key socket under the unit to turn the blades back and forth. Press the reset button on the bottom when done.
Never put your hand in the disposal. Use tongs or pliers to remove anything you can see.
Disposals leak at the top flange, the dishwasher inlet, the drain connection or the body itself. Dry everything, run water and check where it appears. A loose connection can be tightened, and a worn gasket replaced.
A leak from the housing means the unit has failed and needs replacing.
Hard water leaves scale on the disposal and the drain line. Flushing with hot water and an occasional vinegar rinse keeps things moving.
If your house has an older cast iron or steel drain behind the kitchen, repeated disposal clogs may mean a buildup in the line, not just the trap. A plumber can check.
Disposal jobs are short, and price depends on the cause.
Ask whether the new disposal has a warranty and who handles it.
Disposals do not clear fibrous scraps, grease or large amounts of food. A slow drain after the disposal usually has a clog in the trap or the line. Smells come from residue on the baffle and the grinding chamber.
Run cold water when you use the disposal and flush for a short time afterward. Ice cubes and citrus peels freshen it, but they do not fix a clog.
Pick a horsepower that fits your use. A larger motor handles more waste. Check the mounting type and the dishwasher connection. A plumber can remove the old unit, set the new one and test for leaks.
If you have a double sink, the disposal connects to a trap arm that may need adjusting. Ask about electrical, since the unit needs an outlet or a hard-wired connection.
Avoid grease, coffee grounds in large amounts, pasta, rice, potato peels and bones. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in a disposal. Run it with water, and keep it clean.
The City of Thornton asks residents not to pour cooking grease down drains. Put it in a can and throw it away.
Run cold water before, during and after use so grease and food move down the line instead of settling in the trap. Feed small amounts at a time, and avoid fibrous peels, potato skins, coffee grounds in bulk and anything with grease.
If it hums and does not turn, switch it off and use the hex socket at the bottom to free the flywheel, or press the reset button. A tripped breaker or reset is a mild sign. Never put a hand in the unit, even when it is off.
A leak at the top flange, the dishwasher inlet or the body each has a different cause and cure. Look under the sink with a flashlight and tissue to find the wet spot. Check the dishwasher hose connection too, since a loose clamp is a frequent culprit.

The blades are jammed. Switch off power, turn them by hand with the hex key, then press reset.
Sometimes. A loose connection or gasket is a quick fix. A cracked housing means replacement.
Many last about eight to fifteen years, depending on use.
The drain line past the disposal is clogged. A plumber can clear it.
Turn off the switch, empty the cabinet and ring the 24/7 line. A weeping seal or loose drain joint can often be repaired, whereas a cracked housing generally means a new unit.
Switch it off and call the 24/7 line.
